Port Ellen Distillery Overview The Port Ellen distillery was founded by Alexander Mackay in 1824. It is located in Port Ellen in the Islay region of Scotland. This distillery was mothballed in 1983 but still has its malting facilities in use by other Islay distilleries. Its water source was from the Leorin Lochs. There are no official bottles from the Port Ellen distillery. Ownership Established by Alexander Mackay in 1824. It was later sold to John Ramsay in 1836 and acquired by Port Ellen Distillery Co. Ltd in 1920. Taken over by DCL in 1927. The distillery, latterly owned by United Distillers and Vintners is now Diageo. History- Production started 1825
- Closed from 1930 until 1967 opening modernized with the stills being doubled to four
